My biggest show ever is tomorrow, the Remsen Barn Festival of the Arts! I’ve sewed like a madwoman for the last 2 weeks. There is sweater fuzz and thread everywhere, but I’m ready. I sewed 4 purses, 6 scarves and countless brooches this week.

I’ve sewed up a storm for my fall shows including the Remsen Barn Festival. My sewing room looks like a fabric avalanche and I’m only taking breaks to cook meals & shower. I’m so excited and nervous! I hope I can get a lot done this week.

Here’s a sneak peek at some items in progress and some finished creations too…

tutorial tuesday: craft show headband display

What do you get when you have a small trash can, burlap and some headbands? Why a headband display, of course!!!

I’ve been searching for a creative & eco-friendly way to display my headbands in my craft booth. I wanted to avoid buying some new expensive stand, so I went with a suggestion from an EcoEtsy team member. Her idea was to use a vase.

I went to the thrift store with a tape measure in hand in search of a one. There are several problems with using a vase… they break easily and none were wide enough. Then I spotted an ugly little trash can with green ivy on it. It ended up being the perfect size for my headbands. SCORE!

what you’ll need

:: one small round trash can
:: gesso
:: mod podge
:: 1/2 yard fabric (I recommend using a lighter weight fabric like cotton) or more depending on the can size
:: scissors
:: wax paper (I used foil because I ran out)
:: masking tape
:: wet cloth
:: patience ;)

what you need to do

1. Tape down wax paper to your work area. The tape is necessary to keep the paper from moving around when applying the Mod Podge.  Paint the trash can with a generous coat of gesso. Let it dry completely and add another coat.

2. After the second coat of gesso is dry, lay your fabric down on a clean surface. Place the trash can on top of it and roll them together. Cut the fabric once you have enough to go all the way around it with a little overlap. You want at least 1″ extra on the top and bottom to cover the edges.

3. Stand the trash can up and trace around the bottom. Do not make this any larger than the bottom of the can. When you are done this will be the top.

4. Now lay out the large fabric piece on the wax paper. Cover it quickly with the Mod Podge. It dries super fast so don’t waste time. Once you have it on, paint some extra on the seam to hold it in place.

5. Wrap your fabric around the trash can. Smooth out any lumps. Then apply the Mod Podge to the smaller piece and put it on top (or what use was the bottom of the can).

6. Let it dry until it is stiff or no longer tacky. You’re done!
